What is Discipleship?

3w

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we are excited about fulfilling the word that Jesus has called us to do. Jesus’ own words in Matthew 28:19-20 best describe just what this mission looks like:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

We believe this Great Commission statement, the call to make disciples, is the task to which every believer in Jesus Christ is called, not just those in leadership. This is mission that energizes us and informs every single ministry that we are a part of. In the spirit of the Great Commandment, Harvest Bible Chapel is looking to make quality disciples of Jesus at every step by loving God first and others second.

But if the job is to make disciples, how is this done in our church?
Describing what a quality disciple looks like along three lines is helpful:

WORSHIP CHRIST

WORSHIP CHRIST

A QUALITY DISCIPLE WORSHIPS CHRIST (John 4:23-24)

  • Worshiping Christ involves valuing Jesus Christ above everything

  • Reflect words and deeds of adoration to Christ

  • Application: Commit to faithfully attend weekend worship service

In every setting, Harvest Bible Chapel is seeking to make disciples who worship Jesus Christ in spirit and in truth with their entire lives. By God’s grace, we strive to implant solid truth-filled and Spirit-led worship into every available opportunity from our weekend worship services, to our prayer nights, to our small group nights and so on. Worship is more than singing, and we want to see Jesus glorified by men and women who worship him in everything they do.

WALK WITH CHRIST

WALK WITH CHRIST

A QUALITY DISCIPLE WALKS WITH CHRIST (Colossians 2:6-7)

  • Walking with Christ involves intentional pursuit of Christ

  • Personal disciplines in the Word, prayer and witness

  • Application: Commit to personal growth and faithful participation in a Small Group

The second critical component of a disciple speaks to the believer’s day to day walk in faith, and we believe that our walk in the Lord benefits directly from a dynamic fellowship with other believers.  In short, connecting with the rest of the body of Christ is not only helpful, it’s critical.  Most vividly portrayed here at Harvest through our small group ministry, we are looking to encourage one another to grow in Christ through accountability, prayer, and Bible study.

WALK WITH CHRIST

WORK FOR CHRIST

A QUALITY DISCIPLE WORKS FOR CHRIST (Ephesians 2:10)

  • Working for Christ is part of Walking with Christ

  • Every Christian has gifts to use for Christ

  • Application: Serve in a ministry of Harvest

Finally, Harvest Bible Chapel seeks to be a church where believers in our midst are pushed from looking at self, out into active roles of service in our church body. Taking our lead from Jesus who gave his life for us, we seek to make disciples who give of their time, energy, skills, and spiritual giftedness to build up the body of Christ through service.
